GRUNDY CENTER - This is about all Grundy Center has had to talk about.
Spartan seniors Danny Eisenman and Carter Burmester were left to divvy in the last district qualifier medal at Friday's Class 1A sectional boys' golf meet at Town & Country Golf Club, as Grundy Center claimed a team title to the fourth year consecutively.
Head coach Dennis Dirks passed out the medals pursuing the eight-team tournament, telling his squad's top finishers to "split it up" before another may be acquired in the Iowa Secondary school Athletic Association.
Brad HamesEisenman and Burmester both shot 83 over their par-72 home course on another wet and windy spring day in central Iowa.
"I think our coach will most likely get one more for people, otherwise I don't know who gets it," said Eisenman, who had previously been on Grundy Center's latter state tournament teams. "Flip a coin or something."
The senior-laden Spartans scored a 340 to guide the final team standings, gaining their place at next week's district meet in Cedar Falls and granting one more team a similar chance.
AGWSR, using its 366 total, finished third to succeed to districts as a team initially since winning its 2A sectional in 2005. Clarksville, behind runner-up medalist Jaron Wagner's 79, progresses with a 350.
Wagner lost around the second hole of a sudden-death playoff with NU High's Joe Weber, a three-time state qualifier, for medalist honors. Don Bosco sophomore Carson Barron, who tied Eisenman for 21st place at state last spring, placed third regarding his 81.
BCLUW were only available in sixth with its 376 team total, led by Chad Frazer's 89.
"You consider the scores today then there is probably only 12 or 13 scores under 90, and I think there was a couple of the reduced five and four of these dozen under 90, i really see that and i also is able to see it's a tough track today," said Dirks. "Damage control is what it amounts to, be capable of maintain your ball in play. You already know there's destined to be a great deal of bogeys available by everybody, so steer clear of the big numbers and you will be able to are available in having a respectable score. Which is might know about did in most cases."
The Spartans' four counting scores counseled me top-10 finishers, with Jordan Curren carding an 86 and Clay Burmester contributing an 88.
Eisenman, the reigning NICL West medalist, had no spectacular shots to speak of, he explained, but simply one double bogey in his 40-43-83 day.
"I think all of us are pretty relaxed and learn how to play this golf course so we don't need to put a lot of pressure on ourselves," he said. "The ideal thing I will tell the people is simply be smart. In case you have one bad hole, keep your head up, keep playing and merely play your individual game."
The course and the conditions allowed only for six total birdies at the time, with Clay Burmester comprising Grundy Center's only sub-par number with his 3 around the par-4 third hole.
"The thing about our golf course is it's really a tough place to shoot well, and you factor in the wind and it could make the course even tougher than what it already is," said Dirks. "So the boys are probably a little bit disappointed with a few with the higher scores that they can shot but at the same time, it can be sometimes a tricky course to attain."
Eisenman said it would be a "two-club wind" all day every day, but the Spartans still managed their game good enough to adopt a 10-stroke victory in front of Clarksville.
AGWSR, which finished fourth behind Grundy Center, Gladbrook-Reinbeck and BCLUW at Monday's NICL West meet in Marshalltown, was led by Owen Abkes' round of 87. Bryce Eichmeier shot 88, B.J. Reents had 91 and Derek Schipper 100 to help you the Cougars go forward.
"We knew it turned out destined to be tough, particularly with Grundy Center playing at their property course," said Cougars head coach
Brad Hames, "but I told the fellows that they can take the next two teams and gonna be a dogfight, and it was that.
"It's been an aggravating year that i'm proud of our little ones, they've battled through everything year long. We awoke today and yes it was raining and windy and I said, 'It's the next day, exactly like it's been all spring fellas,' so I'm happy with them for battling through today."
Dunkerton and Waterloo Christian tied for fourth at 374 with BCLUW close behind in sixth place. The Comets got into Friday's sectional talk to higher hopes than having their season arrive at intense end.
"We came in thinking we'd the opportunity and I think we did, we merely didn't play as well as we're effective at along with the kids know that," said BCLUW head coach Heath Rhinehart. "With Grundy Center hosting, if you know more than likely we were holding going to win, so we had that opportunity. Of course, if we had played in addition to we're effective at, which was in your grasp. It's disappointing."
Frazer charted the Comets' only birdie regarding his 3 on the par-4 eighth the next time around, finishing as BCLUW's only scorer below 90 and winding up 12th overall.
"That's one kid it is possible to count on day in and outing," said Rhinehart. "He's had the opportunity to set up solid numbers, he may not place the lowest score on the market, but he's consistently gonna give to us sub-42 or 43. Also can you ask for, he played great all year, the conference meet demonstrated that."
Brad HamesCole Thompson was next looking for BCLUW regarding his 95. Zach Johnson and Gabe Reyes both shot 96, followed closely by Logan Simpson's 97 and also a 103 from Jimmy Sharp.
Grundy Center and AGWSR should go to Pheasant Ridge Golf Course in Cedar Falls next Friday for the district meet, accompanied by eight other schools for the 11 a.m. tournament. The top two teams and four individuals from each district advance to the 1A state meet, to be held May 27-28 at Lake Panorama National Resort in Panora.
